Emergencies
Emergency and Adverse Weather Information
Where to get help and information in an emergency, during severe weather, flooding or a power cut, and how to be prepared.
Current alerts
If there is a local emergency or severe weather affecting Llanidloes, a coloured banner appears at the top of every page of this website with the latest information. When no banner is showing, there are no current alerts from the Town Council.
Useful numbers
Keep these somewhere easy to find, and save them in your phone.
Gas emergency
If you smell gas or suspect a leak: open windows, do not use switches or naked flames, leave the building and call.
Powys County Council
Out of hours emergencies: 0345 054 4847 (after 5pm, weekends and bank holidays).
Llanidloes Town Council
Local information during office hours. Town Hall, Great Oak Street.
Severe weather
- Check the forecast and Met Office weather warnings before you travel.
- In snow, ice or storms, only travel if you really need to. Keep a torch, warm clothing, water and a charged phone in the car.
- Clear snow and ice from paths outside your home if you can, and keep an eye on neighbours who may find it hard.
- In hot weather, drink plenty of water, keep out of the midday sun and check on older or vulnerable people.
Flooding
- Check whether you are at risk and sign up for free flood warnings with Natural Resources Wales or call Floodline on 0345 988 1188.
- Never walk, swim or drive through flood water. Six inches of fast-moving water can knock you over and 60cm can float a car.
- Move valuables, important documents and medication upstairs. Know where your gas, electricity and water shut-offs are.
- Keep away from riverbanks and the edges of Llyn Clywedog and the Severn while water levels are high.
Power cuts
- Call 105 to report a power cut. It is free and works from any phone.
- Keep a torch and spare batteries to hand, and avoid using candles where you can.
- Keep fridge and freezer doors closed. Unplug sensitive appliances.
- If someone relies on powered medical equipment, make sure they are registered with their electricity network as a priority customer.
Look out for each other
In an emergency, neighbours are often the first and best help. If you can, check on older, disabled or isolated people nearby, share what you know, and tell the Town Council or Powys County Council about anyone who needs help that you cannot give.
A simple emergency kit
- Torch, spare batteries and a wind-up or battery radio
- A charged power bank for your phone
- Bottled water and food that does not need cooking
- Any regular medication, and a basic first aid kit
- Warm clothes and blankets
- Copies of key documents, and a list of important phone numbers
More information
The Town Council is not an emergency service. In an emergency always call 999. We will post local information here and in the site-wide alert banner when we can.
